A retracting needle safety syringe (2) includes a barrel (4) having
a tip (10), to which a needle assembly (28) is mounted, and a plunger
(6) including a stem (34) and a piston (40) at the distal end of
the stem. The piston has a piston body (46) and a piston seal (58)
which engages the barrel inner surface. The piston seal is detached
from the piston, the piston body is secured to the tip, and the
tip of the barrel is detached from the remainder of the barrel when
the plunger is moved to its distal position. Pulling the plunger
proximally from the distal position back towards a proximal position
causes the piston body, the tip and needle assembly to be pulled
into the interior (56) of the barrel, but without the piston seal
sliding against the barrel. This retraction can take place manually
or automatically.
A disposable safety syringe has a needle shuttle slidably located
within a main syringe barrel. The shuttle has a pair of outwardly
extending guide tabs which engage a guide slot formed in the barrel
wall. The upper end of the needle shuttle is configured to accept
a Wyeth needle cartridge having a needle attached to an ampoule
by a carrier. A bushing and rod assembly are mounted in the barrel
below the ampoule. After use, the needle shuttle is maneuvered downwardly
by the guide tabs to a locking position in which the needle attached
to the ampoule is housed within the barrel for safe disposal.
A safety syringe for intravenous injection, includes: a hollow
needle assembly having a hollow needle portion detachably coupled
to a shank portion embedded in a sleeve portion eccentrically formed
on a syringe and having a needle head portion formed on a rear portion
of the shank portion, and a plunger straightly slidably held in
the syringe without being rotatable and having a biasing socket
eccentrically recessed in the plunger for engaging the needle head
portion of the needle assembly for a coupling of the needle assembly
with the plunger for a retraction together into the syringe for
obliquely biasing the needle portion for preventing re-protrusion
of the needle outwardly, thereby allowing a variety of needles of
different sizes to be replaceably mounted on the shank portion outside
the syringe for a convenient mounting of the needle on the syringe.
