In a system with a surgical needle (10) and a handle (20), the
surgical needle (10), in its proximal end region opposite the needle
tip, includes a support section which is adapted to be pushed in
the handle (20). The handle (20) includes a lumen adapted to support
the support section of the surgical needle (10) and a locking device
(30 26), which can be adjusted from a locking position, in which
the support section is secured to the handle (20), to a release
position, in which the support section can be pulled out of the
lumen.
A surgical needle (1) for implanting a tape (2) has a needle tip
(12) at the distal end (10) of the needle (1) and a shaft (14).
An insertion wing (20) with a distal (24) and a proximal (26) end
extends from the shaft (14). The insertion wing (20) widens from
its distal end (24) in proximal direction and has in the area of
its proximal end (26) an attachment device (32) for the tape (2)
to be implanted.
The surgical needle holder has a support body formed of an electrically
conducting material and constituted by an outer cylindrical tube
and an inner core. The outer cylindrical tube and the exposed parts
of the core are surrounded by an insulating jacket. At one end of
the core extends a blind bore or passageway into which the shank
of the surgical needle is inserted. The blind bore or passageway
crosses a cylindrical cavity formed in the core. The cavity has
a vertical face and an opposing inclined face. The cavity is accessible
through a slot formed in the surface of the outer cylindrical tube.
A releasable locking device is formed by an electrically conducting
plate having an insulated tab portion. The plate is mounted for
pivotal movement from an upright position to a maximum forward inclined
position and occupies the cavity with the insulated tab portion
extending outwardly through the slot to the exterior of the support
body. The plate also has a central aperture which, when in its upright
pivotal position, is in alignment with the blind bore which has
the same diameter. A coiled spring is housed in a groove formed
in the inner core and surrounded by the outer cylindrical tube.
The spring engages and urges the conducting plate to its maximum
forward portion.
A multiple capacity surgical needle immobilization safety device
is provided for use in disposal of needles during medical treatment.
The device can be included in a procedure kit or trays where several
needles and cannulas, up to five per tray, are provided as a set
to be used sequentially in performing a specific procedure such
as spinal block or other anesthesia.
